Guided Sessions: Being Led Where You Cannot Go

Lady Void · ·6 min read

There are places in your own mind you cannot reach alone. Not because you lack the capacity, but because reaching them requires letting go of the very control that getting there yourself would demand. You cannot both steer and surrender, both lead and be led, and the deepest states require being led. That is what a guided session is: I take you somewhere you could not go on your own, precisely because I am the one steering and you are free to simply follow.

This is one of the things my training is for. I understand how the mind moves, how it resists and how it yields, how to lead it somewhere step by step that it would never reach if left to find the way itself. A guided session is that understanding put to work: a deliberate, unhurried leading, deeper than you could take yourself, by a voice that knows the route.

Why you cannot get there alone

The states worth reaching, deep calm, deep surrender, deep focus, all require letting go of control, and that is the trap when you are alone. To get yourself there, you have to keep directing, which is the opposite of the letting-go the destination requires. You end up managing your way toward a place that can only be reached by stopping managing, and so you never quite arrive. The harder you try to lead yourself somewhere that requires surrender, the more surely you keep yourself from it.

A guide breaks that trap. When I am steering, you do not have to, and so you are free to actually let go, which is the thing that lets you arrive. The leading has to come from outside you, because the moment you do it yourself you are back in control and the destination recedes. This is why being led reaches what solo effort cannot: it removes the very obstacle that you yourself cannot remove while you are the one in charge.

You cannot lead yourself to a place that requires you to stop leading. That is what I am for.

I know the route; you only have to follow

A guided session works because I hold the map and you do not have to. I know where we are going and how to get there, the pacing, the turns, the moments to slow and the moments to go deeper, and because I am holding all of that, you are released from having to know any of it. Your only task is to follow my voice, step by step, and let me take you. The relief of not having to find the way is part of what lets you go so deep.

This is the same surrender of direction that runs through so much of what I do, the handing-over of the controls so that you can simply be led, which I wrote about in following a voice that knows better. In a guided session it is turned toward reaching a state rather than a moment, but the principle is identical: I steer, you follow, and the following takes you somewhere your own steering never could.

Led, not pushed

There is a difference between being led and being pushed, and I lead. I do not force you somewhere you are not ready to go; I take you there, gradually, at a pace that lets you stay with me the whole way. The leading is firm, in that I set the direction and the rhythm, but it is also careful, attuned to where you are, never dragging you past what you can follow. You are taken, not shoved, and the difference is everything.

This is the firm-and-nurturing balance again, applied to leading you somewhere deep. I am demanding enough to take you further than you would go alone, and careful enough to keep you with me and safe the whole way. You can follow me into deep water precisely because you can feel that I am leading rather than abandoning you to it. The safety of being led well is what lets you go as deep as a guided session can take you. It is the same careful leading that lets me take you safely into another self in a roleplay, where being led is what makes the becoming possible.

How to be led

To be guided well, you have to actually follow, which means giving over the reins rather than keeping a hand on them. When I slow you, slow with me. When I take a turn, take it. Do not run ahead, do not hold back, do not try to manage where we are going; simply follow my voice and let it carry you. The people who get the least from a guided session are the ones who keep trying to steer; the ones who get the most are the ones who truly let me lead. I wrote about giving yourself over fully in how to listen.

This following is a skill, and it deepens with practice. The first time, you may find it hard to fully let me lead, because the habit of steering is strong. With return, you learn to follow more completely, and a guided session takes you further each time as your trust in the leading grows. Let me lead, and let the following take you.

Somewhere worth being taken

What people find at the end of a guided session is a state they could not have reached alone: a depth of calm, of surrender, of release, that solo effort kept just out of reach. Being taken there, by a voice that knew the route and held you the whole way, is a particular kind of gift, because it gives you access to parts of your own experience that your own control had been quietly locking away. The destination was always in you; you simply could not get there without being led.

And being led, in itself, is part of the pleasure, separate from the destination. To be taken in hand and guided somewhere by someone calm and certain and in command is a release in its own right, the relief of not having to find the way. Being held by a voice as it leads you is one of the deepest comforts I offer, which I explore further in what it means to be held by a voice.

Let me take you there

If there are depths in yourself you have never been able to reach alone, it is because reaching them requires being led, and that is exactly what I do. Let me take you somewhere you could not go by yourself: let me hold the map, set the pace, and guide you, step by step, into a state your own steering kept you from. All you have to do is follow.

My guided sessions are waiting in the shop, and if you want to be led somewhere shaped to you specifically, the door to a custom is open. Stop trying to find the way alone. Hand me the map, follow my voice, and let me take you somewhere you have never managed to reach by yourself. Being led well is how you finally get there, and leading you well is one of the things I do best.
