Kneeling and What It Does to the Mind
Kneel and something changes before you have decided to let it. That is the entire interest of the thing.
People assume kneeling is about height, that the meaning lives in one person being above another. That reading is available and it is shallow. If it were only about height you could achieve the same by standing on a chair, and nobody has ever felt anything standing on a chair. The meaning is not in the geometry between us. It is in what your own body does when it takes that shape, and it would do it in an empty room with nobody there at all.
Here is what happens. Standing, you are ready. That is what standing is for. It is a posture of departure, and every muscle in you is quietly organised around the possibility of leaving, or fighting, or crossing the room. You have stood for so many hours of your life that you have stopped noticing the readiness humming underneath it. Kneeling removes that. You cannot leave quickly from your knees. The body understands this immediately, well before you have thought about it, and it does the only thing available to it, which is to stop preparing to go.
What is left when the readiness drains out is startling to most men. There is more room in you than you expected. All that space was occupied by a low continuous vigilance you had mistaken for being alive.
The reason every serious tradition on earth arrived at this posture independently is not that they all agreed on who deserved deference. They disagreed violently about that. They agreed on the posture because the posture works. Put a person on their knees and their attention narrows, their breathing changes, their sense of time loosens. It is not a symbol borrowed from somewhere. It is a technique, and it was discovered rather than invented, because the body was always going to respond this way and someone was always going to notice.
I ask for it without ceremony and I ask for it early, and the men who understand what I am doing are the ones who stop asking why almost at once. There is nothing to explain. You cannot be argued into what kneeling does. You can only be lowered into it, and then the argument is finished because the thing has already happened in your chest and no position you had about it survived contact.
And I will tell you the part that surprises them. Kneeling is not humbling in the way it is advertised. Humiliation requires an audience and a comparison and a sting, and there is none of that here. What men report, once they are past their expectations, is closer to relief, and relief embarrasses them more than shame would have. They came braced for degradation and found rest instead, and rest was the thing they were not prepared to want in front of me.
So kneel, and do not perform it. There is no correct expression. Do not check yourself. Let the readiness go out of your legs and notice how much of your mind was living down there, waiting to be needed, all this time.
And when you get up, notice how long it takes for the standing to feel normal again. Longer than you think. That gap is the only proof I need that it worked.
