On Correction

Lady Void · ·3 min read

You will get something wrong. Not through defiance, usually, but through the ordinary way a man's attention drifts when he thinks nobody is checking. I notice anyway. I always notice, and what I do next tells you far more about me than what you did tells you about yourself.

Correction is not punishment wearing a gentler name. Punishment settles a debt and then it is finished, both of you slightly smaller for the exchange. Correction is not interested in debts. It exists because I intend for there to be a next time, and I would like the next time to be better, which means the correction is aimed forward, at the man you are becoming, not backward at the mistake you already made.

That is why it is quiet more often than it is severe. A raised voice tells a man he was wrong. A steady one tells him he is still being kept, still worth the correcting, which is the part that actually lands if you let it. The men who flinch hardest at a calm correction are usually the ones who were braced for punishment and got something that required them to stay present for it instead.

Do not mistake being corrected for being at risk. If I did not intend to keep you, I would not bother. Indifference does not correct anything, it simply lets a man drift wherever he was already headed. Attention is the expensive part, and I am spending it on you deliberately.

So when it happens, do not rush to apologise your way out of the discomfort. Sit in it. Let it do the thing it is for. A correction you absorb properly changes something quietly and permanently, and a correction you only survive changes nothing at all, which means we will simply be here again.
