On Hearing No
You will ask me for things I will not give. That is not cruelty. It is the shape of what we have, and you agreed to it the first time you knelt.
No is an answer
When I say no, I have heard you. I have thought about it. I have decided. Asking again in a softer voice does not change my mind, it only tells me you were not listening the first time.
Notice what you do next
Some people sulk. Some go quiet and wait for me to feel sorry. Some try to bargain. Each of those tells me something, and none of it is what I hoped to learn.
The better answer
Say thank you. Mean it. A no from me means I trust you enough to be honest, and that I am still paying attention to what is good for you, even when what is good for you is not what you wanted.
Let it settle
You do not have to like it. You only have to hold it without spilling. Carry it for a day and see how it feels then. Most wants are lighter the next morning.
What it earns you
The one who takes a no gracefully is the one I find myself saying yes to later. Not because they asked well, but because they showed me they could be trusted with the answer either way.
Ask. Then listen. That is all I require of you today.
