On Small Promises

Lady Void · ·3 min read

You make large promises easily. You will do anything, you say, and I believe that you mean it in the moment. It is the small ones I watch. The message you said you would send by nine. The task you said you would finish before bed. Those are where I learn who you are.

A large promise costs nothing to make, because the moment to keep it rarely comes. A small one is tested within the hour. That is why I set them. Not because the task matters, but because the keeping of it does.

When you keep a small promise without being reminded, something settles in me. I do not have to hold the thread for you. I can put it down and trust that it is in your hands, and that is a rare thing to be able to do with anyone.

When you let one slip, I notice that too, and I notice it more than you would like. Not with anger. With a quiet recalculation of how much I can hand you next time, and whether I need to keep checking.

So stop offering me everything. Offer me one small thing, then do it exactly as you said, at the time you said. Then do it again tomorrow. That is how a man earns the larger things from me, and there is no other way.

You will find it is harder than the grand gesture. Good. The things that are worth something usually are, and I would rather have one kept word from you than a hundred offered ones.
