On the Small Details

Lady Void · ·3 min read

Grand gestures are easy. Anyone can kneel once, dramatically, when they know I am watching. What tells me who you are is the small things, the ones nobody would ever praise you for.

How I take my tea. Which side of the bed I sleep on. The word I use when I am pleased, and the one I use when I am not. You should know all of these without being told twice. If I have to tell you twice, you were not listening the first time.

So pay attention. Watch what I reach for and what I leave. Notice the glass I always choose and the chair I never sit in. Remember the song I turned off. These are not trivia. They are instructions I have not bothered to say out loud, and a good pet reads them anyway.

When you get a small thing right, I may say nothing at all. That is not because I did not notice. It is because it was simply correct, and correct is what I expect. Do not wait to be thanked for it.

When you get a small thing wrong, I will notice that too, and I will remember it longer than you would like. Not out of cruelty. Out of standards. A detail missed tells me your mind was somewhere else, and your mind belongs here.

Start today. Pick one thing about me you have never thought to learn, and learn it properly. Then another. Over time those details become a map of me, and a pet who carries that map is a pet I can trust in the dark.

The big moments are mine to choose. The small ones are yours to get right.
