The Difference Between Service and Performance
Service and performance look identical from the outside for about three weeks. Then they separate completely, and the separation is not subtle once you know what you are watching for.
Performance is aimed at me. It wants to be seen, and it is structured, whether he knows it or not, around the moment I notice. There is a small pause after it is done. He would deny the pause exists. It is where he waits to find out whether it landed.
Service has no such pause. The thing is done because it needed doing, and the doing is the end of it. He is not standing beside the act waiting for a verdict, because the act was never addressed to me in that way. It was addressed to the arrangement.
I am not against performance and I do not punish it. Everyone begins there, and it would be strange if they did not: he is new, he wants to be good at this, and the only measure he has is my reaction. What matters is whether he stays there. A man who is still performing in month six is not devoted, he is auditioning, and an audition is exhausting for both of us because it never closes.
The tell is what happens when I am not paying attention. Not testing him, simply elsewhere, distracted, uninterested that evening. Performance thins out immediately. It has nothing to feed on and it does not know what it is for. Service is completely unaffected, because it was never running on my attention in the first place. This is why I do not need to set traps. Ordinary life sets them continuously.
The other tell is correction. Correct a performance and he collapses, because you have not adjusted an action, you have withdrawn the approval the whole structure rested on. Correct service and he simply does it differently. There is nothing to collapse. He was not holding himself up with my opinion.
Men arrive assuming devotion is a feeling of great intensity, and that the intensity is the proof. It is the least reliable evidence there is. Intensity is cheap, it is available on demand, and it says nothing about Tuesday. What I am reading is much duller and much harder to fake: whether the thing still happens when nothing is watching, when he is tired, when he is slightly annoyed with me, when there is no possibility of being praised for it.
That is the whole distinction. Performance asks what did you think. Service does not ask, and the not-asking is not coldness. It is the point at which he stopped needing the arrangement to reassure him and started simply living inside it.
