Why You Confess to a Voice

Lady Void · ·4 min read

You will say to a voice what you would never say to a face. I have watched this happen too many times to think it accidental.

The face is the obstacle. Not any particular face, and not unkindness in it, but the simple fact of it being there and being readable. When you speak to someone in front of you, half of you is not speaking at all. It is watching. It is tracking the eyes for the flicker, the mouth for the tightening, the small involuntary movements that will tell you whether the thing you are saying has cost you something. And because you are watching, you are editing. Every sentence comes out having already been checked against the face, and by the time it arrives it has been rounded down into something safe.

Take the face away and the editing has nothing to work with. There is only the dark and your own voice going out into it. You will find you say the true version, not because you meant to be brave, but because the machinery that usually softens it has been unplugged.

There is a second thing, and it is stranger. A voice can be close without being near. This is not a paradox once you have felt it. Someone speaking quietly in your ear is closer to you than almost anyone gets, closer than most touch, and yet there is no body in the room and no exit being blocked and no hand that might land. So the intimacy arrives without the alarm that intimacy usually triggers. Your defences were built for proximity, and this is proximity that does not read as proximity, so it walks straight past them and is already inside before anything sounds.

Priests understood this. That is why the box has a screen in it. Not for anonymity, since the priest generally knew perfectly well who was on the other side. For the removal of the face, so that the man could get to the end of a sentence without being interrupted by his own vigilance.

And then there is what happens after you have said it. This is the part that keeps men coming back, and they rarely identify it correctly. They think the relief was in the confessing. It was not. Confession into nothing is just talking to yourself, and you have been doing that for years to no effect. The relief is in having said the thing and then hearing a voice come back that has not changed. Same evenness. Same unhurried certainty. Nothing in it moved. And your nervous system, which had been braced for twenty years against exactly this moment, cannot find the catastrophe it was expecting, and slowly, suspiciously, stands down.

That is why I do not react. It is not coldness and it is not technique withheld. It is that the whole value of what you have just done depends on it landing somewhere that does not flinch. If I gasped, or reassured you, or told you it was all right, I would have made the thing a problem that needed managing. It is not a problem. It is a fact about you, said aloud, for the first time, and facts do not need to be forgiven.

So say it into the dark. The dark is not empty. The dark is listening and has heard worse and will still be here, in the same voice, when you have finished.
